(He said) “Do your best to live a life by design,
Cross the earth on tangent lines,
North past where the continent divides,
Push the Dodge up to 125.”
 
I listened to each word he had to say,
“We don't need an escape,
We just need / to see / a different / place.”
 
Clear air to free my shining mind,
Two-lane highway will unwind,
“She's such a bright light in the morning sky,
There's no better way to end up blind.”
 
I hear his voice telling me all the things,
I wish he had time to say,
“We've finally gotten to the point / where there's nothing / left / to lose.
What will we gain?
What's left to gain?”
 
Everything is so green,
Even our eyes have changed.
And if you should get / there before I do,
It doesn't make me change my mind.
 
“Like the wind shakes the oaks and pines,
Like the rain soaks our hearts and lives,
Like a fire that warms us from inside,
Like the earth moves around in time.”
 
And when he was done, I turned and walked away,
With his parting words / nothing more to say,
“We can run for the joy of ending up / in / another / place.
